Well, Jesus Christ Superstar has been going on. The show looks pretty good, but I guess I never fully realized the beauty of the production until last night's performance.
One of my good friends from a previous show ("A Little Night Music"), Jan - an elderly woman who played the role of the grandma in the past musical, came to see the show. Throughout the full duration of the production her hands were held closely against her chest and her eyes gifted a small depiction of how captivated she was with the powerful production. It was truly a genuine joy to watch her cling on to every note and feel her heart warm with the beauty of this miracle show.
After the show, I was, of course, more than happy to see this amazing woman. As I walked over there, her eyes flooded with tears, and her hand covered her mouth as if to say her emotions would never be comparable to the feelings she was experiencing. I hurried to her and gave her the greatest hug I could ever offer. I felt her body shaking in my arms, and the sound of her breath was scattered breathing was inevitably sincere. She couldn't even find the words to describe how proud she was of me as her friend and as a performer, and ever moreso - the entire "beautiful production."
When I asked her how she's been, she goes on to tell me she has been very, very sick. Not fully understanding the severety of the situation, I tell her her to contact me if I can help in any way. As she greets fellow cast members her friend proceeds to tell me the true unfortunate condition of Jan. At this point, time has become an issue in her life, whereas it never was before. My heart hurt after that one. Her friend continues - Jan has been in bed for nearly a week now, and she found the strength within herself to get up, get here, and watch you play this role she says you were born to play. The friend goes on to say she has never seen Jan as happy or as touched by any person, thing, or performance as she was tonight. She saw Jan looking up as if she was praying to God, thanking him "for letting her lead such a beautiful life," and it warmed her heart. Last night, our production made Jan's night, week, and good part of her life.
This, my friends, is why I do theatre. This is why I do theatre.
